Paper weight
Paper weight tells you how thick the sheet is. About 100 gsm (68 lb) suits graphite, charcoal and colored pencil. Around 150 to 200 gsm handles ink, markers and light washes. Watercolor needs 300 gsm (140 lb) paper.
Surface texture
Paper with tooth grips graphite, charcoal and colored pencil and lets you build layers. Smooth paper and Bristol give crisp ink lines. Marker paper is smooth and coated so alcohol ink does not bleed through.
Binding and format
